At first glance photography appears as a purely technical medium to illustrate reality. For this, digital techniques offer better-and-better ranges of possibility. With his pinhole images, Markus Kaesler goes the opposite way. The complete renunciation of modern techniques reduces the medium to it‘s essentials; light and time, place and movement. With that, Kaesler’s work reflects, on a fundamental basis, the conditions of it‘s own creation. He asks questions that reach further than just depiction. What happens if light of different origins works on the same image? Or, how does the distance between two places look? The transitions and interspaces that appear within that create the special charm of Kaesler’s works.
